A Delphi consensus study conducted in Spain to identify barriers and strategies related to the optimal use of GLP-1 receptor agonists in people with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk or established cardiovascular disease. The study involved endocrinologists, cardiologists, internists and primary care physicians.
The main barriers identified were therapeutic inertia, lack of a comprehensive cardiovascular risk approach, insufficient awareness of the cardiovascular benefits of GLP-1 receptor agonists, and economic or administrative restrictions.
Consensus strategies included implementing simple comorbidity-based treatment algorithms, improving professional and patient education, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration and promoting digital tools to facilitate guideline implementation and optimize cardiovascular risk management.
